Chrysler was noted for offering Limited Edition Spring Specials to get customers into the dealership after the snow had melted. One such Limited Edition Spring Special was the 1970 Newport 440, with only 175 produced.
Most Newports had a 383 between the fenders, but a savvy buyer could navigate his way through the order sheet to special order a 350hp/440cid. The Newport 440 is not one of those.
The Spring Special "Newport 440" was only available as a 2-door Hardtop in the High Impact Colors of Rallye Red or Lemon Twist. The interior came in only black or white, and the vinyl top was only the same color as the interior. Other equipment included:
- Torqueflite Transmission (no stick shift available) with floor mounted shifter
- Heavy-Duty alternator
- Heavy-Duty suspension
- Power Steering
- Power Disc Brakes
- Sure-Grip differential
- Styled Road Wheels
- Raised White Lettered tires
- Vinyl Bucket Seats with Console for floor shifter
- 440 Medallions low on the front fender aft of the wheel opening
The package added $1,240 to the price of the Newport Hardtop -- putting it into Chrysler 300 territory in 1970.
