Beginnings of a Wiki, feel free to improve
As it applies to drag racing, a sanctioning body is the primary organization behind a series of events. They promote and administer events, create and administer the drivers and class rules, handle the winner's payouts and trophies, and just about everything else concerning the series of events to the championship.
