The first transmissions we're manual transmissions, which required you to engage a clutch and manually change gears. Next came variations of semi-automatic transmissions - some with clutches, and some without. Finally automatic transmissions without a clutch and gear changes were fully automatic.
This type of transmission requires disengaging a clutch by depressing the clutch pedal to selecting each gear using a gear shifter, and engaging the clutch by releasing the clutch pedal. A very small percentage of new cars have a manual transmission.
