An assembly of parts including the speed-changing gears and the propeller shaft by which the power is transmitted from an engine to a live axle.

Types

The first transmissions we're manual transmissions, which required you to engage a clutch and manually change gears. Next came variations of semi-automatic transmissions - some with clutches, and some without. Finally automatic transmissions without a clutch and gear changes were fully automatic.
